Spain 2013
Tuesday, April 30, 2013
On April 13 to 21st this year, fourteen students and I traveled to Spain
for a trip called "Los Pueblos Blancos" (the white villages in southern
Spain). We first flew to Madrid where we visited the Prado Museum,
experienced a food scavenger hunt in an authentic market, and tried Spanish
tapas, churros y chocolate, on a "Tapas Crawl."
Next we stopped in Toledo to visit a sword and damascene jewelry
factory, and the cathedral of Toledo with the art of El Greco. We then took
a bus to Sevilla stopping at the city of Ronda along the way to see its
historic bullring and ancient bridge.
We arrived at Sevilla just in time for the Feria de Abril, a local
celebration which included women in authentic costume and a city decorated
with flowers and banners. After seeing the Plaza de España and Maria Luisa
Park, we toured the Cathedral of Sevilla and climbed the Giralda tower.
Students enjoyed a flamenco lesson and then saw a flamenco show with
professional dancers.
Our group continued on to Granada and a tour of the Alhambra and then
were off to our final destination, the Costa del Sol. While staying at our
hotel in Torremolinos, we were lucky to have warm weather and students
enjoyed swimming in the Mediterranean and spending time at the beach. We
also took a train to Málaga and shopped, walked, and explored the city.
The weather was fantastic, (70's -90's all week) and a terrific time was
had by everyone. We were all a bit sad to return to the States on the last
day and many students said they hope to return to Spain soon in the future.
I hope to travel with students again to Spain in the spring of 2015.
Enjoying the beauty, language and culture of Spain is always an
unforgettable experience!
